Ergonomics Considered from the Start: Beck Lifting Table at ZORN Maschinenbau

A standard product becomes a customized process solution

Ergonomic workstations aren’t just created once production is already underway. Our new case study at ZORN Maschinenbau GmbH in Stockach demonstrates just how effective forward-looking planning can be.

ZORN specializes in custom machine manufacturing and develops, among other things, compact machines for micro-machining. A distinctive feature of these machines is their space-saving design: Their footprint is roughly the same as that of a Euro pallet. The machine consists of a lower supply module and a machining module mounted above it.

However, this design poses an ergonomic challenge during assembly. If the machine is placed directly on the shop floor, some work areas are very low to the ground. Other components, on the other hand, are difficult to reach and require working above shoulder height or using a ladder.

A pit for the optimal working height

ZORN took this issue into account early on during the planning of the new production building. A pit was incorporated into the floor of the facility, into which a Beck TL double-vertical electrohydraulic lift table was subsequently installed.

The machine being assembled rests on the lift table during production. This allows it to be raised or lowered depending on the work step. The employee moves the supply or machining module to an easily accessible position with the push of a button—with millimeter precision and as often as the assembly process requires.

This approach significantly reduces the need for prolonged bending, poor working postures, and repeated use of a ladder. At the same time, the machine remains easily accessible from various sides.

What makes it special is the integration

The lift table used is based on a proven standard product from the Beck lineup. Its seamless integration into the building and the manufacturing process makes it a customized solution.

This example shows that a customized ergonomic solution does not necessarily have to start with the development of an entirely new product. Often, it arises when proven technology is incorporated into workplace and production planning at an early stage.

In our new field report, we show how the lift table is used at ZORN and how the various assembly positions can be reached ergonomically.
