Buying Guide – What to Look for When Purchasing a Lifting Device
A lifting device is a long-term investment in productivity, workplace safety, and employee health. To help you avoid choosing the wrong device, we’ve provided the most important criteria to consider.
How much weight do you actually need to lift?
The load capacity is the most important criterion. Determine the heaviest workpiece you regularly move, add a safety margin of at least 20%, and select the next higher load capacity class. Our equipment covers the range from 100 kg (material lift) to 1,000 kg (pallet lift). For heavier loads, we design custom solutions.
How heavy are the loads, and how often do you have to lift them?
The lifting height depends on the layout of your workspace. Compact models are sufficient for ergonomic working heights (90–110 cm). If you’re transferring goods to conveyor belts, into machine feeders, or to higher shelf levels, you’ll need more—our TSLN 9 pallet lift reaches up to 1,620 mm. Also pay attention to the lifting cycles per hour: For repetitive work, an electrohydraulic solution is a must; for infrequent use, a manual or battery-powered device is sufficient.
Which drive system is right for your application?
Manual devices are affordable, low-maintenance, and do not require electricity—ideal for workpieces weighing less than 100 kg and infrequent lifts. Electrohydraulic lifting devices such as our pallet lift are the right choice for heavy loads and frequent lifts per shift—they lift effortlessly, smoothly, and continuously. Battery-powered devices (e.g., the TEAMER) combine mobility with electric lifting power and are unbeatable in situations where there is no power outlet nearby.
Stationary or mobile?
Stationary devices such as the SERVANT articulating arm are perfect for fixed workstations with repetitive tasks. Mobile lifting devices (TEAMER, Mobillifter, pallet lift with cart) go wherever the work is. Rule of thumb: Do you move the workpiece, or does the device move to the workpiece? The answer is key.
What load capacity do you need?
Platform, mandrel, fork, suction cup, clamp, carrier system—choosing the right load-handling device is crucial for safety and efficiency. Large-surface plates require a vacuum lifter, pallets need a platform or fork, and round workpieces require V-blocks. We configure the lifting system to fit your workpiece—even as a custom-made solution.
Don't forget about safety, inspections, and regulations
Lifting equipment is subject to inspection in Germany. According to DGUV Regulations 52 and 54 and the Industrial Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV), lifting equipment must be inspected at least once a year by a qualified person. Beck lifting equipment is designed in accordance with applicable standards (including EN 1570 for lift tables and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC). Upon request, we can also handle initial commissioning, training, and safety inspections.

Since 1984, Reinhold Beck has been developing machines and lifting equipment designed to reduce physical strain on workers. What began as a specialist in gluing presses for stair construction has evolved into a recognized manufacturer of ergonomic work equipment, whose devices are now in use throughout Europe, the U.S., and Russia.
In-house design, in-house production, in-house assembly
We don't outsource production—we do it ourselves. Design, manufacturing, assembly, and final inspection all take place in Krauchenwies-Bittelschieß. This high level of vertical integration is what enables us to quickly fulfill special requests, supply replacement parts even years later, and take personal responsibility for every unit.

Our work has received multiple awards: in 1991 for the pneumatic multi-level gluing press, in 2019 for the work- and assembly table Supporter AM 500. In addition there is one European patent (EP2308344) for our steplessly height-adjustable work table and several utility models. What are lifting devices?
Lifting devices are technical aids that lift and lower loads vertically or, in combination with other functions, rotate, swivel, and tilt them. They are used wherever workpieces, pallets, panels, or assemblies are too heavy, too bulky, or too unwieldy to be lifted by hand alone. Lifting devices protect employees’ health, speed up processes, and improve dimensional accuracy during machining and assembly.
What is the difference between a lifting device, a hoist, and a lifting aid?
The term “hoisting equipment” is defined in a standard (DGUV Regulation 54) and refers to power-driven devices such as chain hoists, cranes, or wire rope hoists. “Lifting equipment” is the broader umbrella term—it includes both hoists and manual devices such as pallet jacks or tripods. “Lifting aid” is the ergonomically oriented term for devices that directly assist people in the workplace—in other words, exactly what Beck Maschinenbau manufactures.
What kind of lifting equipment does Beck Maschinenbau offer?

What is the load capacity of a Beck hoist?
Depending on the model, the load capacity ranges from 100 kg to 1,000 kg. The TEAMER can lift up to 240 kg, while the TSLN 9 pallet lift can handle up to 1,000 kg. For heavier loads, we design custom solutions through our custom machine manufacturing division. Important: Always select a load capacity with a safety margin of at least 20% above your heaviest load.
How often must lifting equipment be inspected?
According to DGUV Regulations 52 and 54 and the Industrial Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV), lifting equipment and hoists must be inspected at least once a year by a qualified person. Shorter inspection intervals may be necessary in cases of intensive use or special operating conditions. The initial inspection must be performed before the equipment is put into service for the first time. We assist you with initial commissioning, training, and safety documentation.
